Perceived Control

“My life didn’t please me, so I created my life.”

-Coco Chanel

I chose the tagline of “Mastering a Limitless Life ” because, A, it plays on the Jill of All Trades thing and, B, it is the reason I am able to be a Jill of All Trades. People who have “a lot going on” are able to do so because they don’t let anything get in their way. I have tried my best to not let how a situation looks get in the way of what I want out of it. A big factor in this is perceived control. Yes, there are things that are inherently in and out of our control. However, there are things that are out of our control merely because of how we perceive a situation. An example is deciding how I would spend a weekend. I can easily say I can’t go out because I have 3 small children. Traveling with 3 children is very difficult and because of that I don’t have control of how I spend my weekend. With increased percieved control, I decide that the children will not get in the way of my fun, but I’ll stay home today because I want to. I’m in the driver’s seat, not my situation. The beauty of perceived control is empowerment and hope. With this mindset, I’ve conquered so much. If there’s something I want, I try to brainstorm about what’s actually getting in my way. Most of the time, it’s me, the barriers I’ve made, or the control I relinquished to something or someone else. I am not a “control freak” and I am neither advocating that people should embrace that lifestyle. I’m just advocating for people, including myself, to appreciate the control they have over their lives when things appear out of their control.
